Sun Kissed: A Summer Makeup Workshop Recap

Last year, after attending a number of makeup classes in New York, I joked with a couple friends of mine that it would be fun to do one of my own, down here in Washington, DC. At the time, I thought it was a silly thought — to think that I could pull something off like that! I’m pretty sure that those who know me well think that I can be kind of ridiculous when trying to tell a story. But nevertheless, the idea to do a class always stayed in the back of my mind!

Fast forward a few months later, my roommate Nicole announced that she was participating in a challenge to raise awareness and funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Nicole’s sister, Lauren, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth, received a double lung transplant five years ago and while she is doing much better, she is still affected by the disease, as are many others. There is currently no cure for CF, which can cause severe respiratory and digestive issues. To help ramp up awareness, Nicole reached out to friends and family to come up with ideas for fundraisers to hold during the course of her challenge.  When she initially asked for ideas for events, the thought of holding a class immediately popped back into my mind! I pitched the idea of holding a makeup class, and from there, “Sun Kissed” was put into plan!

After several months of planning, we held “Sun Kissed: A Summer Makeup Workshop” this past Sunday at Bittersweet Creative’s studio. Bittersweet Creative is a local cause-related creative design firm that focuses on using the power of narrative to support and bring awareness to global stories of good. Besides the wonderful work they do, they have a stunning work space that was perfect for the class!

Prior to the workshop, we decided the focus of the class would be to teach how to achieve a dewy, glowing, luminous summertime look.

Before and After Sun Kissed

After opening doors, attendees were invited sip and munch on some summertime refreshments, including a mimosa bar and tropical fruits!

The live demonstration was displayed on a large screen monitor so students could get an up-close look at what I was doing. Alongside the live display, a presentation of detailed notes, and a list of products used, was displayed on the projector screen.

While I won’t go into too much detail on what we used, as this is a privilege for those who attended ;), a couple of key products played a big part in achieving this luminous look on Nicole.

Skin Prep: Radiant makeup starts with radiant skin! We prepped Nicole by using, MD Skincare Peel Pads, Tatcha’s Deep Hydration Firming Serum, and Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer.

Eyebrows: Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow in Soft Brown

Eyes: MAC Melon Pigment, Inglot #77 Gel Eyeliner, L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara, House of Lashes False Lashes, Pixie Luxe

Skin: Nars All Day Luminous Foundation, Tarte Creaseless Concealer, Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit, Nars Blush in Orgasm, MAC Cosmetics Refined Golden Bronzer

Lips: Soar Lipliner, Peach Blossom Lipstick, Smile Dazzleglass – all MAC Cosmetics

After the class, attendees were sent a full list of the products used along with detailed step-by-step instructions on what we did in the class. Interested in attending the next class? Sign-up for email updates on the homepage and lookout for announcements for the next class!

Celebrity Makeup Artist Mario Dedivanovic’s Master Class with Kim Kardashian in New York City

For those of you who may not be familiar (how dare you if you don’t!), Mario Dedivanovic is one of the world’s most celebrated celebrity makeup artists. This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending his sold out Master Class in New York City at the Helen Mills Event Space and Theater. I woke up at 3:00 am on Sunday morning (to make sure I had time to put on a full face of course) and catch the 5:00 am bus to NYC in order to make it on time to his class.

When I arrived, the line was already halfway down the block with women (and a few good men thrown in) waiting to see Mario in action! I was lucky enough to make a new friend in line, Nicole (hey, girl!), and I’m so glad I did! After checking in and getting our gift bags, Nicole was able to snag us two seats right in the front row!

From Jennifer Lopez to Gabrielle Union, Mario has worked with some of the most well known A-list celebrities on the planet. However, if you have heard of Mario, you likely know him through his stunning makeup work on his most popular client, Kim Kardashian. While we knew that Mario typically has a celebrity client volunteering as his model at his workshops, little did we know what a huge surprise we were in store for. After being seated, Mario soon came out to greet the class. But, he had some bad news for us — his model had unfortunately canceled last minute and he no longer had anyone available to do makeup on for his workshop. He asked the class if anyone from the crowd would be able to stand in and act as his model, and of course, everyone’s hand shot up (who WOULDN’T want their makeup done by Mario?!). A couple seconds after he asked, we heard, “I can!” and that was the moment where roughly 80 women and men simultaneously had a heart attack. Kim Kardashian popped out from beneath the stage curtain to reveal herself as the surprise model!

Mario’s original model really had canceled, and Mario informed us that at the last minute, he had called Kim to let her know and she volunteered to take a red eye from LA to stand in.

With Kim’s signature look being the most popularly requested, Mario began working his magic on Kim to deliver. Unfortunately for you all, at the beginning of class, Mario asked us to not reveal any of the products or techniques that he used online or social media and to keep whatever we learned safely protected in our own minds. Mario has worked years and years to perfect his signature makeup looks and it was his intention that the tips and techniques he shared this past weekend be only for the eyes and ears of those who attended! I completely respect and understand the top secret nature of a class like this, so if you’re really that curious as to what he might have used, I guess you’ll just have to book me to get a first-hand makeup experience! 😉

All jokes aside, the class was extremely informative and it really was a treat to see how Mario transformed the already beautiful Kim into her ever so popular signature glam self. While I won’t go into what products or techniques he used, one thing that Mario did emphasize was his makeup style’s evolution. Many may remember the “old Kim” look of super dark, smokey eyes and extreme lashes (which I still love just as much as her current looks and kind of miss, *cough, cough*). Mario and Kim both agreed that their tastes have changed over the years to one that embraces a more tasteful, clean approach to makeup. With the rise and popularity of “Instagram artists,” super chiseled eyebrows and overly contoured faces as everyday makeup is something he’s been trying to shy away from over the past couple of years. While the makeup on Kim was undeniably beautiful, the makeup was clean, pretty and simple — something that I’ve been further inspired to work on after attending Mario’s class.

At the end of class, Kim and Mario volunteered to take a group photo with everyone and they also shared a couple of last words with the students. Love her or hate her, Kim demonstrated the utmost respect and gratitude toward Mario and his attendees and shared very honest feedback about what is important to her when hiring a makeup artist. Kim and Mario both agreed that having artistic ability is just 50% of the formula, and having a humble, professional, and kind attitude is just as important, if not more important, than being able to deliver beautiful makeup. This is something that I have always strived to demonstrate and will continue to do so when dealing with new clients as I continue my journey as a makeup artist!

I’m so glad I attended and plan to make it my goal in 2015 to continue to learn as much as I can to be the best makeup artist I can be. Thank you, Mario and Kim, for an amazing workshop — until we meet again! 😉
